Medicare Supplement Plan N
Nearly identical coverage to Plan G at a somewhat lower premium, in exchange for small copays at the point of care.
Medicare Supplement Plan N
Plan N is nearly identical to Plan G. It also pays virtually all of your medical costs after the Part B deductible. A few differences make the premium a little lower.
You pay a copay of up to twenty dollars per office visit and up to fifty dollars per emergency room visit, waived if you are admitted to the hospital. Those copays do not count toward the Part B deductible.
Who Plan N suits
-
People who want supplement style coverage at a somewhat lower premium.
-
People who do not mind small copays at the point of care.
-
People who see doctors that accept Medicare assignment, which avoids excess charges.
-
People who, like every supplement holder, want to keep any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare, with no network to check.
The excess charge, and why it matters more with Plan N
This is the one difference between Plan N and Plan G that can cost you money, so it is worth understanding. There are three kinds of provider.
Most doctors accept assignment. They take the Medicare approved amount as payment in full, and you owe only your deductible and coinsurance, which your supplement then pays. With one of these doctors, Plan N and Plan G behave the same way apart from the office visit copay.
Some are non-participating. Medicare still pays its share, but they can bill you up to 15 percent above the approved amount. That extra is the excess charge. Plan G and Plan F cover it. With Plan N you are responsible for it.
A small number have opted out of Medicare entirely. Medicare pays nothing except in an emergency, and you pay the whole bill under a private contract. That is true whichever supplement you hold.
Most providers accept assignment and never bill an excess charge. You can look up a specific provider on Medicare.gov, and we are happy to check your doctors for you before you choose between Plan N and Plan G.
