Brief Plan Descriptions

Medicare Supplement Plan F

The only plan that covers every gap Medicare leaves. Closed to people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1 2020, and kept for a lifetime by those who already hold it.

Medicare Supplement Plan F

Plan F was the top selling Medicare supplement plan for many years, and it is the only plan that covers every gap Medicare leaves, including the Part B deductible and Part B excess charges. Your costs for Medicare covered care in the United States are zero, with no deductible of your own to meet. Like every supplement it pays foreign travel emergencies at 80 percent, and it does not cover care Medicare does not cover.

Plan F has been closed to people newly eligible for Medicare since January 1 2020. If you became eligible on or after that date you cannot buy it. It has been replaced by Plan G.

Important: Plan F is closed to new enrollees

Medicare Supplement Plan F has been closed to people newly eligible for Medicare since January 1 2020. If you became eligible for Medicare on or after that date, Plan F is not available to you and Plan G is the closest equivalent.

If you already have Plan F you are grandfathered and can keep it for a lifetime. The test is when you became eligible for Medicare, not your birth date, so if you were eligible before January 1 2020 but had not yet enrolled, you may still be able to buy Plan F. Ask us and we will check.

Who Plan F suits

  • People already enrolled in Plan F, who are grandfathered and can keep the plan for a lifetime.

  • We urge our Plan F clients to keep it if the premium fits comfortably in the budget.

  • If the premium starts to feel uncomfortable, tell us. We can help you move to a lower cost Plan G, Plan N, or Advantage plan.

  • People who were eligible for Medicare before January 1 2020 and already hold the plan have the richest coverage on the market.

What if I need to change plans?

If your budget or your situation changes and the cost of the supplement starts to feel too high, tell us. We can help you find a lower cost plan and handle the change of plan or insurance company for you.

Moving down is the easy direction to travel. In California the Birthday Rule gives you 60 days following your birthday each year to switch to any Medicare supplement with the same or fewer benefits, from any company, with no medical questions and no new waiting period.

Moving back up is the hard part, and it can require medical underwriting. Read Our Philosophy before you make any change, and call us so you know exactly which window you are in.
