Set Up a Username and Password
This is the single most important thing you can do to use your health plan effectively. Essentially all health insurance business is now done online.
Once your insurance card arrives, go to the insurance company website and create an account. Anthem Blue Cross is at Anthem.com and Blue Shield of California is at BlueShieldca.com.
What you will need
-
The member ID number printed on your insurance card, plus basic personal information.
-
The sign up link is usually in the upper right corner of the page.
-
Store the username and password somewhere you can actually find it again. You will need it at the least convenient possible moment.
If you are on Covered California, set up a second account
The exchange account is separate from the insurance company account. You want both.
-
Call Covered California at 800-300-1506 to request an access code.
-
Then go to CoveredCA.com, click Sign In at the top of the screen, and use that code to create your username and password.
-
Once your account exists, you can assign us as your agent, which gives you a local person to call instead of an 800 number.
