What a claim record shows you
-
What the provider billed, which is usually the largest number and rarely what anyone pays.
-
What the insurance company allowed as the negotiated fee, which is the number that matters.
-
What was applied to your deductible, and what the plan paid.
-
That document is the Explanation of Benefits, or EOB.
How to use it
-
An EOB is not a bill. Compare it against the bill the provider sends you. If the two do not match, that is exactly when to call us.
-
If a claims problem ever comes up, you can go straight to your claims history rather than reconstructing it from memory.
-
Checking your claims a few times a year also tells you how close you are to your deductible and your out of pocket maximum.
Our suggestion
Open one EOB and find the negotiated fee for a routine office visit compared with what was billed. You will probably be pleasantly surprised.
That gap is what your insurance company's contracts are worth to you, on every single claim, whether or not you have met your deductible.
